Lightning Sign Former Finals MVP Kirk Williams Jr.

Wednesday, August 30, 2017 (London, ONTARIO) – The London Lightning announced Wednesday they have signed Kirk Williams JR. for the 2017-18 NBL season.

"I've been playing against London, for like five years… so coming to London, you know, might be a little weird, but, I think it will definitely be a great situation." said Williams JR with a smile in his voice. "It's like I know a lot about London anyway, it's like I've already been there."

Williams JR., a 6'7 forward from White Plains, New York, has been in the NBL since its inception, playing for the Mississauga Power, Windsor Express and Niagara River Lions. In the 2014-15 season Williams JR. was named NBL Finals MVP after he helped the Express to the title.  This past season he led the River Lions in points per game (17) and rebounds per game (seven).

The Lightning's new head coach, Keith Vassell, was the interim head coach for the River Lions this past season and he knows what Williams JR brings to a team. "Kirk brings a level of energy and determination that is very hard to find. His athleticism and agility make him very difficult to stop from getting to the basket on the offensive end. Then defensively, he is a tremendous defender. He can defend forwards and point guards; he can defend almost anyone on the floor. He has a grittiness and toughness that is tough to match. He will be an awesome fit."

"We are happy to have Kirk come to London, he is one of the premier players in the league." said owner-gm Vito Frijia. "We are confident he will fit in with the London system and look forward to having him play for the gold and black."
